What is Electric Stacker?
An electric stacker, also known as a walkie stacker, is a power propelled device for lifting and loading pallets. Electric stackers are designed to handle various sizes of pallets and loads, making them versatile tool in material handling. They are ideal for lifting and moving loads to different warehouses or distribution centre levels. The electric stacker is a cost-effective alternative to forklifts, as it does not require a large capital investment and can be operated with minimal training.
Advantages of Electric Stacker
Adaptable
An electric stacker is designed to be nimble and can be utilised in a wide range of storage settings. For example, some stackers are manufactured with a pedestrian platform which operators can stand on for even greater comfort when operating the machine. Furthermore, thanks to modern day innovation, stacker trucks come in various sizes and weight carrying capacities which further contribute towards its exemplary levels of adaptability in warehouse applications.
Environmentally friendly and cost-effective
One of the main advantages of electric stackers is that they are environmentally friendly. This is because they do not use fossil fuels such as diesel or gasoline to power the machines. As a result, they emit no exhaust fumes or noise so are perfect for indoor use.
Furthermore, as we have previously mentioned, most electric pallet stackers are powered by Lithium-Ion batteries which are lightweight and don't need to be maintained too frequently allowing you to save even more money on your power bills.
Timesaving and efficient
Pallet stackers are great time savers for any warehouse environment. Stacking a large number of pallets with manual equipment will take much longer than utilising a battery-powered electric lifter. For this reason, you can experience greater time saving benefits as well as greater efficiencies as you will be able to stacker multiple pallets at once if required too.
No licence needed
Like with many machines you often see in warehouse and transportation environments, you won't need a licence to operate an electric pallet stacker truck. However, you will still need to be aware of how to safely operate it and may need to undergo specific training to gain the necessary knowledge when utilising the machine. For more information regarding electric vehicle licences, read the informative article on our website.
Greater visibility
Because stackers are smaller than your typical forklift, operators have greater visibility when transporting goods from point A to point B. In addition, since there are no cabs when operating an electric stacker, it allows for less obstructions blocking the eyesight of the operator which, as a result, will lead to a reduction in workplace accidents.
Types of Electric Stacker

Electric Straddle Stacker
Electric straddle stackers are the most common type of Electric stacker in Australia. They use straddle legs for distributing load weight. The legs allow them to straddle a pallet, so that the stacker can drive up closer to a pallet, without requiring as much space.
Electric Reach Stacker
Electric reach stackers are the next most common model in Australia. They are very similar in design to the Straddle Stacker but they are fitted with a pantographic scissor mast. This means the mast is able to move loads forward away from the body of the stacker.
Ride on Electric Stacker
Ride on Electric stackers are very similar in design to standard Electric stackers but they feature a platform (or Bob) and specialised controls to allow for the operator to ride on the Electric stacker. One key disadvantage of ride on Electric stackers is that the driver requires a forklift licence to operate them, in comparison to walk behind units that don’t require any licence for operation.
Counter-Balance Electric Stacker
Counter-balance Electric stackers use counter-balance weight to distribute loads; this allows them to operate in narrower aisles than the more commonly used straddle stacker because they don’t have straddling legs outside of the body of the unit.
Standard Electric Stacker
Standard Electric Stackers use legs that sit under the forks to distribute load weight. This also allows them to lift and handle two pallets at one time; making them ideal for applications that require both transportation and stacking of pallets. They also offer the smallest turning circle of the different types of Electric stackers.
Use of Electric Stacker in Warehouse
Picking and Storing Goods
Electric stackers are often used for picking and storing goods in a warehouse. They can easily lift and move pallets of goods, allowing workers to quickly transport them to their desired location. This can help improve warehouse efficiency and productivity.
Loading and Unloading Trucks
Electric stackers are also useful for loading and unloading trucks. They can lift and move pallets of goods onto and off of trucks, making it easier and quicker to load and unload shipments. This can help reduce the amount of time it takes to unload and reload trucks, which can be beneficial for meeting tight delivery schedules.
Replenishing Inventory
In a warehouse, it's important to keep inventory levels stocked and maintained. Electric stackers can be used to quickly and easily move goods from the receiving area to the storage area. They can also be used to move goods from the storage area to the picking area, allowing workers to restock shelves and fulfill orders more quickly.
Optimizing Warehouse Spaces
Electric stackers are designed to be compact and maneuverable, making them useful for working in narrow aisles and tight spaces. This can help warehouse operators to optimize the use of space in their facility and increase storage capacity.
Promoting Workplace Safety
Electric stackers are often equipped with safety features, such as brakes and warning signals, to ensure that workers can operate them safely. They are also designed to be ergonomically friendly, reducing the risk of injuries and accidents caused by strain or fatigue.
The main components of the electric stacker include:
Frame: This is the main structure of the stacker, usually welded from steel, used to support other components and bear the weight of the entire vehicle.
Fork
The fork is the main component of a stacker truck used to transport goods. It usually consists of two forks that can be telescoped and lifted to accommodate goods of different sizes.
Motor
The motor is the power source of the electric stacker and is responsible for providing power to drive the lifting movement of the wheels and forks.
Battery
The battery is the energy source of the electric stacker and provides power to the motor. Depending on the type, the battery may be lead-acid, nickel-cadmium or lithium, etc.
Hydraulic system
The hydraulic system is responsible for driving the lifting movement of the fork. It usually consists of hydraulic pump, oil cylinder, control valve, etc.
Tires
Tires are the part of the stacker that is in contact with the ground. They are responsible for bearing the weight of the entire vehicle and providing friction to drive the vehicle forward or backward.
Controller
The controller is the "brain" of the electric stacker, responsible for receiving the driver's operating instructions and controlling the work of the motor, hydraulic system and other components.

The working principle of an electric stacker is to use an electric motor to drive wheels or chains and other devices to move, thereby realizing the stacking and handling of goods. Specifically, electric stackers usually consist of electric motors, hydraulic systems, control systems and frames.
The electric motor provides power to drive devices such as wheels or chains to move forward, backward, and turn. The hydraulic system provides hydraulic pressure through components such as hydraulic oil pumps and hydraulic cylinders to realize the up and down movement of the forks and the stacking of goods. The control system is responsible for monitoring and controlling various actions of the vehicle to ensure the accuracy and safety of operations.
When operating an electric stacker, the driver needs to choose the appropriate operating mode according to actual needs, such as cargo lifting, cargo lowering, vehicle forward, vehicle backward, etc. By controlling the operating handle or buttons, the driver can easily implement various actions to efficiently complete the task of handling and stacking goods.
Electric Stacker vs Forklift: Which is Better?
Electric stackers and forklifts each have their own advantages and applicable scenarios, so it is impossible to simply say which one is better. Here are some comparisons between them:
Purpose
Electric stackers are mainly used for handling and stacking goods inside warehouses, and are suitable for narrow passages and limited spaces. Forklifts are more suitable for handling heavy objects outdoors or in larger places such as factories. They can carry heavier goods and transport them over long distances.
Operation method
Electric stackers are usually driven by electric power, which is simple and convenient to operate. The driver only needs to control the operating handle or buttons to achieve various actions. There are two types of forklifts, manual and electric. Manual forklifts require the driver to manually transport goods, which is relatively laborious; electric forklifts are similar to electric stackers and are relatively simple to operate.
Efficiency
The carrying capacity and transportation speed of forklifts are usually higher than that of electric stackers, so forklifts are usually more efficient than electric stackers in terms of large-scale logistics transportation. However, when it comes to handling and stacking within the warehouse, electric stackers offer greater flexibility and convenience.
Cost
Electric stackers are generally less expensive to purchase and maintain than forklifts because they are typically smaller and lighter than forklifts and require relatively less maintenance and upkeep. However, when considering long-term operating costs, costs such as battery replacement and charging for electric stackers also need to be considered.
The Using Steps of Electric Stacker
The steps for using an electric stacker usually include the following aspects:
StartupFirst
Check whether the battery power is sufficient and make sure the indicator light is normal. Then, insert the key into the lock and turn it clockwise to start the device.
Driving
Before operation, check the working condition of the brake pump station and brake pump to ensure that everything is normal. Holding the joystick in hand, drive the vehicle slowly toward the work area. If you need to go forward or backward, you can operate it through the forward and backward buttons or the rotary switch on the controller. At the same time, control the steering of the vehicle through the left and right turn buttons on the controller. While driving, pay attention to controlling the speed, especially in narrow spaces and when turning, to avoid collisions.
Cargo loading and unloading
Use the lifting function of the stacker to lift the goods to the appropriate height, and then move them to the target location. During this process, ensure that the fork is inserted smoothly and accurately into the bottom of the cargo to avoid the cargo from tilting or falling. When lifting and lowering goods, operate slowly to avoid accidents caused by going too fast.
Stacking
When goods need to be stacked on the shelf, slowly approach the shelf and lift the goods onto the shelf. Then, lower the pallet, paying attention that the forks cannot exert pressure on the shelf to ensure that the goods are in a safe position.
Parking
After completing the task, park the vehicle at the designated location. This can be done via the parking button on the controller or the braking system. At the same time, the forks should be placed where the stacker can operate to facilitate the operation of other equipment.
Routine maintenance and upkeep
Regularly check various components of the electric stacker, such as batteries, motors, tires, etc., to ensure that they are in good condition. When a fault or abnormality is discovered, repair and replacement must be carried out in time to ensure the normal operation and service life of the equipment.
Electric Stacker Operating Tips for Safety
Ensure load is tightly secured
Before operating an electric stacker, ensure that the loads are tightly secured and stable.
You can use ropes or straps to secure the loads. This helps to prevent the loads from falling and tipping over.
Moreover, do not carry more loads than necessary.
Apart from exceeding the weight limit, which can cause imbalance, the loads may block your view, increasing the risk of injuries.
Control speed
When handling material using an electric stacker, maintaining a safe speed is essential.
If you move too fast, it can lead imbalance and destabilisation, resulting in accidents.
One tip to safely operate electric stackers is to use the right combination of speed and sharp turns.
Conduct routine inspection
Avoid equipment failures by conducting a thorough inspection before using an electric stacker.
A routine inspection allows operators to check for the condition of the equipment and make sure it is up for the job.
Besides, these daily safety inspections and tests will also help operators develop good maintenance habits.
Use appropriate clothing and PPE
Operators must dress appropriately to avoid serious injuries should there be accidents.
They must be adequately equipped with appropriate safety gear, such as safety shoes, gloves, and helmets.
How to Maintain Electric Stackers
Check and Refill the Pallet Truck's Oil
Your pallet truck's oil level should be checked every six months, and oil should be filled up or replenished at least once a year. Pallet trucks should be lubricated using hydraulic oil. At 40°C, the oil must have a viscosity of 30cSt and a total volume of around 0.4 liters (ISO VG32). If a different oil is used, the pallet truck may be difficult to pump up since the oil will be excessively thick.
To top off the oil in your pallet truck, follow the steps below:
Turn the pallet truck on its side and lower the forks to the lowest position.
The drain plus of the hydraulic cylinder should be placed at the top.
Disconnect the screw plug.
Fill the filler aperture with hydraulic oil until the level touches the bottom.
Screw in the screw plug and stand the device up.
Regular Lubrication
The manufacturer would have used a long-life grease to lube all bearings and axles. Lubricate the pallet truck with long-life grease on the lubrication points, such as the wheels, axles, and grease fittings, on a monthly basis and/or after each cleaning.
Pallet Truck Wheel Protection
Working in a clean environment is more enjoyable. The pallet trucks' wheels are particularly sensitive to the surface on which they are utilized. All kinds of debris and wiring can become lodged between the wheels, causing them to wear out much more quickly. This can be readily avoided by washing the wheels on a regular basis and removing the dirt before utilizing the pallet truck. It's also a good idea to keep an eye out for curbs and steps.
Checking Chain Positioning
Check to see that your pallet truck's chain is still in the correct position on a frequent basis. This is most noticeable when the forks are no longer lower when the lowering valve is operated. Reattaching the chain to the lever is a simple solution.
Adjusting Lowering Value
The lowering valve is most likely to blame when the pallet truck's forks no longer pump or lower. You'll need to adjust the lowering valve in this scenario so you can pump or lower the forks again. If pumping does not work, loosen the lowering valve screw slightly. If the pallet truck's forks no longer descend, screw the lowering valve screw in slightly. After using the pallet truck, keep it unloaded and in the lowest position possible.
Pallet Truck Safety
The pallet truck will last longer if the following three tips are followed:
Don't operate the pallet truck on a hill since it can reverse and hit something if you let go.
Set the operating lever to the drive position to move the pallet truck. As a result, the drawbar travels more freely, and the hydraulic pump section's pressure drops. This safeguards the valve's hydraulic seals and other components. This guarantees a longer life expectancy.
Never overburden the pallet truck; follow the manufacturer's recommended lifting capacity.
