Components of Spider Crane
Chassis
The chassis is the basic part of the spider crane and usually consists of a crawler traveling mechanism, a power system and a cab. The crawler traveling mechanism enables the spider crane to move and operate flexibly on uneven ground or in workshops. The power system provides power for the spider crane to ensure its normal operation. The cab is where the operator controls and monitors.
Lifting arm
The lifting arm is the main working part of the spider crane and is used for lifting and carrying heavy objects. It is usually made of steel structure and can be tilted to change the working radius. The boom can be extended based on the basic boom according to construction needs to expand the scope of operations. When necessary, a boom, called a jib, can be installed on the top of the main boom to further expand the operating range.


Fetching device
The fetching device is the part of the spider crane used to grab and carry heavy objects. Common retrieval devices include hooks, grab buckets, and electromagnetic suction cups. These units can be replaced and adapted to specific needs.
Control system
The control system is the brain of the spider crane, responsible for receiving the operator's instructions and controlling the movement of each component. It usually includes two parts: electrical control system and hydraulic control system. The electrical control system is responsible for controlling the walking, steering, rotation and other actions of the spider crane, while the hydraulic control system is responsible for controlling the lifting, lowering and luffing of the boom.
What Are the Main Features of a Spider Crane?
Tracked undercarriage: Spider cranes have a rubber tracked undercarriage for slow and steady movement on even or rough terrain. Their rubber tracks make them suitable for use on roads and pavements. The base acts as the counterweight, but the narrow footprint is not stable enough for high lifts without extending the outriggers.
Engine and controls: The crane is driven either by a small gasoline or diesel engine, which is often paired with an electric engine of between 300–400V. Operation is through a compact seated console with operating levers or by remote control.
Telescopic outriggers (spider legs): The outriggers have a two-part spider-leg construction that folds out hydraulically. As the upper leg extends from the main chassis, the lower leg section also extends out. The outrigger foot can then be lowered further manually and fixed by pin.
Telescopic box boom: The boom can be completely contracted and lowered fully down onto the chassis for transport. Once the crane has been positioned and stabilized, the hydraulic boom can be extended out to its full length and lifted by the luffing (derricking) cylinder up to around 65 ft (10 m), depending on model.
Slewing platform: The boom is attached to a hydraulic winch and to the turntable. This turntable (slewing platform) can be rotated up to 360 degrees. The hoist rope feeds through the winch drum and along the boom to the block and hook (or other fittings).
Overwinding limiter: Most new spider cranes are fitted with an overwinding limiter to automatically stop further lift once the block and hook are at the top of the boom. This prevents damage to the block and boom and avoids nasty accidents.
Load moment indicator (LMI): Most new spider cranes will also be fitted with an LMI to prevent overloading or overbalancing. If no LMI is fitted, they can usually be purchased and fitted for that particular model.

How High Can A Spider Crane Lift A Load?
Spider cranes often have a very long boom - but that doesn't mean they can carry their maximum payload the full distance of their boom (as the crane would tip).
For example - (just to use round numbers) - a spider crane with a maximum tonnage capacity of 10 tonnes, and a boom that can extend 22m, can only lift the full 10 tonnes up to 3m maximum. That said, it can lift much smaller loads right up to the extended height of 22m.
So when you're reading the spec sheet of a spider crane, you will often notice that their max weight capacity is expressed as 10t x 3m. That means;- it can carry a max load of 10 tonnes up to 3ms, but is capable of lifting smaller loads to its 'maximum lifting height'.

How Do You Operate A Spider Crane?
Operating a spider crane requires a high degree of skill and training. The operator, usually called a rigger, must be able to control the crane's movements precisely in order to avoid accidents, as well as be able to complete the comprehensive procedural process required to lift anything on an Australian job site. Most crane operators and riggers need to complete a lifting study prior to lifting anything.

How Does A Spider Crane Work?
First, the spider crane needs to be placed in the appropriate location. This usually involves confirming the specific requirements of the site, such as the load-bearing capacity, hardness of the ground, etc., and the placement of the crane so that the lifting operation can be carried out conveniently and safely.
After installation is completed, the spider crane needs to be debugged and inspected. This includes checking whether all components are tightly connected, whether all bolts are tightened, whether the torque of the cantilever arm head meets the requirements, whether the boom is lifted and lowered normally, and whether the operating devices are flexible. In addition, it is also necessary to check whether various safety measures are complete, such as whether safety valves, protective devices, etc. are intact.
After ensuring that everything is ready, the spider crane can be started. This usually involves checking whether the power supply, oil circuit, etc. are normal, turning on the engine and observing its operation, and conducting trial runs of various operating devices.
After starting and confirming that everything is normal, you can start hoisting operations. This usually involves selecting the appropriate lifting equipment and performing the correct operation according to the lifting needs. During the hoisting process, it is necessary to pay close attention to various parameters of the crane, such as hoisting height, speed, etc., and adjust and control them according to the actual situation.
After use, the spider crane needs to be maintained and maintained. This includes cleaning the equipment, checking the wear of various components, changing lubricants, etc. to ensure that the equipment is in good condition the next time it is used.
